The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other news outlets were recently given an exclusive sneak peek into the model units of The Couture apartment high-rise. Despite ongoing construction, the 44-story tower is already making waves with its stunning design and prime location overlooking Lake Michigan at 909 E. Michigan St. With 322 high-end apartments and 42,600 square feet of commercial space, this $191 million project by Barrett Lo Visionary Development LLC promises to redefine luxury living in downtown.

Leasing Commenced in January

Willow Bridge Property Co., the property manager for Barrett Lo, is overseeing the leasing process for The Couture. The apartments offer a range of options, from 576-square-foot one-bedroom units to spacious three-bedroom residences spanning 2,350 square feet. Rent prices start at $2,045, with the penthouse, boasting 2,344 interior square feet and a 348-square-foot terrace, already leased for an impressive $11,585 per month. Additionally, the commercial space within the building is expected to house a restaurant and other businesses, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Aesthetic Appeal and Modern Living

Every apartment at The Couture is designed to maximize natural light and breathtaking views, with floor-to-ceiling windows and custom wood cabinetry. These exquisite features combine to create an elevated and modern living space. Residents will also enjoy 10-foot ceilings, quartz countertops, walk-in closets, custom wood plank flooring in the main areas, carpeted bedrooms, LED lighting, and stainless steel appliances. Some units even include outdoor terraces, providing the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the cityscape.

The Couture's array of amenities further enhances the living experience. Residents will have access to a fitness center, swimming pool, clubhouse, lounge, dog park, 24-hour concierge service, business center, bike parking, storage facilities, underground heated parking, and electric vehicle charging stations.

Seamless Connectivity

The Couture not only offers luxurious living spaces but also prioritizes convenient transportation options. The development includes a transit concourse for The Hop streetcar and Milwaukee County's Connect 1 Wisconsin Avenue Bus Rapid Transit. Since its launch in June, the Bus Rapid Transit has connected downtown with Wauwatosa's Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, primarily along Wisconsin Avenue and Bluemound Road.

The Hop's lakefront loop, known as the L-Line, was delayed until The Couture transit center partially opened in October. Currently, the L-Line operates on a limited service until the concourse fully opens this spring. These transit options provide easy access to key destinations, making daily commuting a breeze for residents of The Couture.

Years in the Making

The Couture project was first unveiled in July 2012 but encountered delays due to legal challenges and financing issues. One obstacle involved claims that a significant portion of the former Downtown Transit Center site was located on the bed of Lake Michigan, rendering it unsuitable for private development. However, these challenges were largely overcome, and the 2.2-acre site was sold for a below-market price of $500,000 to facilitate the development.

After obtaining necessary approvals and resolving legal matters, Barrett Lo finally closed the sale in 2016. The project secured financing in November 2020 when the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a loan guarantee. Now, after nearly three years of construction, The Couture is set to open in April, with the entire building expected to be completed by July.
