Do you dream of living off the grid? Living off the grid offers a sense of freedom and sustainability that many people desire. Whether it's reducing your environmental impact or enjoying autonomy, finding the perfect off grid home for sale is an exciting journey. Here's everything you need to know to make that dream a reality.
How We Found Our Off Grid Home
When my husband Dan received a job offer in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, we faced the challenge of finding a suitable home. It was January in the subarctic, making the search even more difficult. We realized that living outside of town would mean finding an off grid property. During our visit to Yellowknife, someone from the company mentioned a cabin for sale off the grid up the Ingraham Trail. Intrigued, we went to see it. Although I liked the cabin, Dan wasn't thrilled about the idea of a honey bucket in the washroom.

However, fate had other plans. Two weeks later, back at our kitchen table in Burlington, Ontario, Dan discovered that the larger off grid house we had admired was listed for sale on a local online classifieds site. Dan accepted the job, and we flew back to Yellowknife that January. The rest, as they say, is history!
Unveiling Off Grid Homes
Off grid homes are residences that operate independently of the public power grid. These homes rely on alternative energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, or generators to provide power. Not being connected to the public power grid not only fosters a sustainable lifestyle, but it also reduces reliance on non-renewable energy sources. In our off grid home, we initially relied on solar panels and had two Lombardini diesel generators as backup power. Recently, we upgraded our system with new solar panels, a Tesla Powerwall, and a Kubota diesel generator.
The Appeal of Off Grid Living
There are many reasons why people choose off grid homes. Beyond sustainability, living off the grid offers a sense of autonomy and freedom. You are not reliant on the public power grid, which means no power outages or disruptions. This advantage becomes especially significant if you live in an area with unreliable power supplies. Furthermore, off grid homes tend to be more cost-effective to run than those connected to the public power grid. You only pay for the power you use, and you're immune to price hikes.
However, it's important to acknowledge that off grid living has its challenges. If you reside in an extremely cold climate, like us, dealing with plumbing issues, frozen pipes, or generator problems becomes part of daily life. Therefore, it's crucial to conduct thorough research, consider your budget, lifestyle, access to fire protection and emergency services, and the climate in your chosen area.
