From humble beginnings, John R. Wood carved out a life that left a profound impact on his community. While he accomplished many things, it was his positive influence on others that stands out the most. Wood, the founder of John R. Wood Properties, a renowned real estate firm in Naples, passed away on August 4, just weeks before his 92nd birthday. His passing leaves a void that is difficult to fill, but his legacy lives on.

A Pioneer in Real Estate

Wood's journey in real estate began in a different era. When he relocated from Arkansas to Naples many decades ago, there were only a few thousand residents and very few homes to sell. Wood focused on brokering lots and acreage, as land sales were more prevalent in Naples at the time. Instead of misleading potential buyers with helicopter flybys, he adopted the slogan "walk on it before you buy," taking them on Jeep tours of available acreage. Wood believed in ethics, honesty, and community involvement, and these principles guided him throughout his real estate career.

Building a Lasting Legacy

Wood's impact extended beyond his real estate business. He served as a role model and mentor to his son, Phil Wood, who joined the real estate business in 1977. Together, they built John R. Wood Properties into one of the largest real estate firms in Southwest Florida. Today, the company boasts 19 offices and over 700 employees. Wood's commitment to excellence and community involvement shaped the company's values and culture.

A Towering Legacy

Wood's dedication to his company was unwavering. Although he mostly retired in the mid-1990s, he continued to serve as the board chairman and a member of the executive committee. His visionary leadership and the team he built made the company flourish. Wood's commitment to leading a life of integrity and his belief in doing the right thing resonated with his employees and clients, creating a legacy that continues to inspire.

A Fond Farewell

The real estate community, Wood's family, and his friends remember him for his genuine personality, deep business knowledge, and caring spirit. He was known for his countless jokes and his ability to make people feel special. Wood's commitment to ethics and his genuine interest in others set him apart. His impact went beyond the real estate industry; he was involved in various philanthropic organizations, including the United Way, the Boy Scouts, and St. Matthew's House.

Leaving a Legacy

Wood's contributions to the real estate industry and the Naples community will never be forgotten. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering ethical standards continue to shape the real estate landscape in Southwest Florida. Wood's family, friends, and employees will always cherish the memories they shared with him. As they mourn his loss, they take comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched.
