Directed by Andrew Rossi, Netflix's documentary series 'The Andy Warhol Diaries' provides an intimate look into the life and works of Andy Warhol. While the series focuses on Warhol's rise in the art world and his personal life, it also introduces viewers to Alan Wanzenberg, the partner of Warhol's former lover, Jed Johnson. In this article, we will delve deeper into the life of Alan Wanzenberg and discover where he is today.

Who is Alan Wanzenberg?

Born in Evanston, Illinois, Alan Wanzenberg showed a passion for design and architecture from an early age. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973, and went on to obtain a Master's Degree in Architecture from Harvard in 1978. It was during his time in New York City, working under renowned architect I.M. Pei, that he crossed paths with aspiring interior designer Jed Johnson.

In 1982, Alan and Jed established their own company, Johnson and Wanzenberg, where they collaborated on designing homes for notable celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Richard Gere, Sandy Brant, and Jerry Hall. Despite their success, Alan and Jed remained humble and hardworking individuals. When Warhol and Jed ended their twelve-year relationship in 1980, Alan became Jed's source of solace and love. They started dating and moved into an apartment on New York City's West 67th Street.

Together, Jed and Alan became renowned figures in the world of architecture and design during the 1980s. They were known for their tasteful blending of contemporary styles and distinctive home decorations. In 1987, their company was split into Alan Wanzenberg Architect P.C. and Jed Johnson Associates, allowing both partners to pursue their individual spheres of expertise.

They enjoyed a peaceful life together with their dog, Gus, and owned two houses on Fire Island, off the southern shore of Long Island, New York. Sadly, tragedy struck in 1996 when Jed, at the age of 47, perished in the TWA Flight 800 crash. Alan was devastated by the loss, but found comfort in the support of old friends like Pat Hackett, Bob Colacello, and Jed's brother Jay. In September 2012, he sold their West 67th Street apartment.

Where is Alan Wanzenberg Today?

Currently, Alan Wanzenberg resides in Ancram, New York. It took him six arduous years to overcome the trauma of Jed's death. Reflecting on that painful period, he shared, "When Jed died, it was horrific and chaotic and frightening, and there was also just a lot of stuff. Things I maintained out of reverence to him, and it was a lot. I did it with a certain energy and I didn't despair over it, but it was a lot." Around 2003, Alan met landscape architect Peter Kelly during Gay Ski Week in Aspen, Colorado. They fell in love and eventually resided in the West 67th Street apartment until Alan sold it in 2012.

Alan and Peter also owned a bungalow in Costa Rica and a country house in Upstate New York. Alan successfully manages his businesses, Alan Wanzenberg Architect and Taghkanic Studios, both recognized for design excellence by the New York Times and featured frequently in Architectural Digest's Top 100 Designers and Architects. Much of his work today is a tribute to Jed's ideas and styles.

In 2013, Alan published a book titled 'Journey: The Life and Times of an American Architect,' which explores his work, inspirations, and his relationship with Jed. Beyond his professional endeavors, Alan is involved in various initiatives to support emerging visual artists and graduate students. In 'The Andy Warhol Diaries,' Alan speaks about how he still loves and misses Jed to this day, and how his affection for Jed continues to inspire him to excel in his work.
