Split air conditioners are a popular choice for residential cooling. But what exactly is a split air conditioner and what sets it apart from other options? In this article, we will explore the working principle of a split air conditioner and delve into its advantages over traditional systems.

How Split Air Conditioner Works

A split air conditioner operates on a direct expansion system, consisting of an indoor evaporator and an outdoor condenser. These two units are connected by insulated copper pipes filled with refrigerant. This allows for the transfer of heat from the indoor space to the outdoors, providing efficient cooling.

The evaporator absorbs heat from the room, while the condenser releases it into the surrounding environment. This process is facilitated by a compressor located inside the condenser. The compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant before it enters the condenser coil, where the refrigerant changes from gas to liquid form. The condenser fan draws in air, which circulates through the coil, aiding in the conversion of the refrigerant.

On the other hand, the liquid refrigerant travels to the evaporator and is converted back to gas form by an expansion valve inside the unit. This rapid expansion causes a drop in pressure and temperature. The evaporator fan draws in air, which passes through the coil, cooling the room in the process.

During operation, the evaporator also removes moisture from the air. When warm air comes into contact with the cold evaporator coil, the moisture condenses into liquid water, commonly known as condensate water. This water is then drained from the evaporator via a drain pipe.

It is worth noting that split air conditioners come equipped with filters on the evaporator, but not on the condenser. These filters help reduce the amount of dust entering the system and improve air quality. Additionally, split air conditioners typically use remote controllers for ease of use, allowing users to adjust settings such as temperature, fan speed, and timers.

Split Air Conditioner vs Central Air Conditioner

Split air conditioners differ from central air conditioners in several aspects. In a house equipped with split air conditioners, each room has its own evaporator, while multiple condensers are located outside the house. In contrast, central air conditioners may have one or two supply air diffusers per room, a single evaporator above the ceiling, and a sole condenser outside.

While split air conditioners always feature one evaporator and one condenser, central air conditioners can have either one evaporator with multiple supply air diffusers or multiple evaporators. However, most central air conditioners have only one condenser. Furthermore, split air conditioners are typically air-cooled, while central air conditioners are usually water-cooled. Central air conditioners also tend to offer higher cooling power compared to split air conditioners.

Advantages of Split Air Conditioner

Split air conditioners offer several advantages that make them a popular choice for residential cooling:

  • Low cost: Split air conditioners are affordable to purchase, install, and maintain due to their simple yet effective design.
  • Easy maintenance: The simplicity of split air conditioners allows non-professionals to service them, reducing the need for professional maintenance.
  • Reliability: Each room being equipped with its own split air conditioner ensures that if one unit breaks down, it will not affect the entire system, unlike central air conditioners.
  • Quick installation: Split air conditioners require fewer pipes and cables, making installation faster and more efficient.
  • Energy efficiency: Split air conditioners with inverter technology offer better energy efficiency than some central air conditioners. This is especially true when the installation of a central air conditioner is subpar due to its complexity.

What is Inverter in Split Air Conditioner?

Inverter technology allows for precise control of the compressor's speed in a split air conditioner. This means that the cooling power of the unit can be adjusted as needed. An inverter split air conditioner is capable of maintaining a more accurate room temperature and offers increased energy efficiency compared to a non-inverter model.

Inverter technology is not limited to split air conditioners alone, as it is also applied in other types of air conditioning systems such as multi-split and VRF (variable refrigerant flow). It is important to note that an inverter split air conditioner may have a higher price tag compared to a non-inverter model.
