Alvar Aalto’s House History

In 1934, Aino and Alvar Aalto stumbled upon a site in the Munkkiniemi district, surrounded by untouched natural beauty. Inspired by this setting, they began designing their dream home, which was completed in August 1936. The house not only served as a family residence but also housed Aalto's architectural office until 1955.

The uniqueness of the Aalto House lies in the combination of its functions. The office wing, characterized by its white-painted, lightly rendered brickwork, represents Aalto's professional side. On the other hand, the residential part, clad in dark-stained timber battens, showcases his personal touch. The building's design prioritizes natural light, orientation, and the integration of rooms and terraces, creating a seamless blend of nature and modernity.

"The ultimate goal of the architect... is to create a paradise. Every house, every product of architecture... should be a fruit of our endeavor to build an earthly paradise for people." - Alvar Aalto

The Interiors of The Alvar Aalto House

Step inside the Aalto House, and you'll be transported into a world of elegance and attention to detail. Every aspect of the interiors reflects the lives of the architect couple and their family, seamlessly blending living and working spaces. By carefully selecting materials and design elements, they managed to create distinct separation between the studio and the family's living areas while maintaining a sense of unity.

Outside, the house may present a severe and closed-off facade, but it is softened by climbing plants and a slate path leading to the front door. The use of wood as a finishing material, combined with the presence of four open hearths built-in brick, marks the transition to the "new" Aalto style, characterized by a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The Aalto House became a testing ground for the couple's creativity and a precursor to their iconic Villa Mairea.
