The first generation of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer was a resounding success, with over 420,000 units sold worldwide. Now, BMW is back with a second-generation model that promises to be even better. This new premium minivan is not your typical minivan, as it boasts a design that leans more towards a crossover. With a sporty and aggressive look, the 2 Series Active Tourer is more premium than ever before. It also inherits many features from higher-end BMW models, like the iX, without the hefty price tag.

To get a taste of what this new front-wheel drive offering from BMW has to offer, we traveled to Malaga, Spain for the international media launch. Over the course of two days, we had the opportunity to test drive three different variants: the BMW 220i Active Tourer, 223i Active Tourer, and the new top model, the 230e plug-in hybrid.

Bolder and More Aggressive Design

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer showcases a significant design evolution for the brand. It is bold, aggressive, and eye-catching. The large grille, sleek headlights, and slim taillights give it a distinctive look that sets it apart from its predecessor. The side profile resembles that of a small crossover, with an attractive C-pillar and roofline. The new model sits a bit lower and has a more upright front end, adding to its sporty appeal.

One of the most notable improvements in the exterior design is at the back of the vehicle. The new taillights are sleek, modern, and exude a premium feel. For the first time, the 2 Series Active Tourer hides its exhaust pipes, giving the rear a cleaner and more sophisticated look.

Huge Quality Improvements Inside

Step inside the new 2 Series Active Tourer, and you'll be greeted by a spacious and luxurious interior. BMW has stepped up its game in terms of materials and trims, giving the cabin a premium feel. The dash design is elegant and modern, and the technology is borrowed from BMW's top-of-the-line iX. Unique touches, such as the all-new seat design and door panels, give the interior a distinctive character. Storage space has also been improved, with more cubby holes and compartments for personal items.

The new 2 Series Active Tourer features the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system, complete with large LCD screens and a Live Cockpit Professional digital gauge cluster. The seats are comfortable and supportive, offering excellent lumbar and side support. Whether you opt for the standard seats or the sport seats with M Sport packages, you'll be treated to a delightful driving experience.

One notable change in the interior is the absence of the iDrive knob. All commands are now performed via touch or voice control. There is also a vertical wireless charging pad, making it convenient to charge your devices on the go. The toggle switch-style gear selector is simple and easy to use, adding to the overall user-friendly experience. The attention to detail, like the double passenger vents and the stylish steering wheel, further enhances the premium feel of the interior.

One of the advantages of the front-wheel drive architecture is the increased interior passenger and cargo space. With the rear seats up, the 2 Series Active Tourer offers 470 liters of cargo space. Fold the rear seats, and it expands to a generous 1,455 liters. Hybrid models have slightly less cargo space, but it still remains practical and spacious.

Without a doubt, the interior is the most remarkable improvement in the 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and will be a major draw for potential buyers. However, it still needs to deliver the handling and driving experience that BMW is known for.

BMW 220i - A Thrilling 3-Cylinder Option

Our first test drive was with the BMW 220i Active Tourer. This model is powered by a three-cylinder engine, delivering 170 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque (280 Nm). The power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch Aisin transmission. The engine features technological advancements, including a dual-injection system, the Miller Combustion method, and an Evo ignition system. It also comes equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system, enhancing fuel efficiency.

The BMW 220i Active Tourer boasts impressive engineering, with an aluminum hood and strategically placed aluminum components in the chassis. These enhancements result in a stiffer and more agile chassis. Combined with revised lift-related dampers and near-actuator wheel slip limitation, the 220i Active Tourer delivers an exciting and dynamic driving experience.

The near-actuator wheel slip limitation enhances agility, traction, and stability. When cornering, the ARB technology applies the brakes as needed, resulting in a more neutral steering behavior. The adaptive M Suspension lowers the ride height, providing a sportier look and improved driving dynamics.

The new My Modes feature allows for customized driving settings. Whether you prefer a personal, sporty, or efficient driving experience, you can adjust the powertrain and steering settings accordingly. In the Personal mode, the BMW 220i Active Tourer shines on smooth roads, delivering a serene ride with a hint of body roll.

Switch to Sport mode, and the minivan becomes more dynamic and responsive, perfect for attacking curvy roads. The steering is more precise, and the suspension absorbs bumps in the road more effectively. While some body roll remains, the 2 Series Active Tourer feels more like a small crossover than a traditional minivan.

The BMW 220i Active Tourer offers a good balance of power and performance. While more horsepower is always welcome, the 220i delivers a satisfying driving experience.

BMW 223i - Taking it to the Next Level

That brings us to the BMW 223i Active Tourer. With 218 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque (360 Nm), this model takes the driving experience to the next level. The power upgrade is immediately noticeable, providing a more composed and exhilarating feel on the road. Overtaking is a breeze, and cornering becomes a more enjoyable experience. While understeer is still present at the limit, the near-actuator wheel slip limitation significantly improves traction and stability. With a drag coefficient of 0.26, the 2 Series Active Tourer is sportier than ever before.

The interior and cargo space are where the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer truly shines. It offers ample room for five passengers and their luggage, with a comfortable driving position even for taller individuals. The rear seating area provides generous headroom, making it a comfortable space for passengers of all sizes.

The seats in the new 2 Series Active Tourer provide excellent lumbar and side support, ensuring a comfortable ride even on long journeys. The automated driving systems featured in this model are on par with higher-end BMW models, offering convenience and added safety. Standard specifications include Cruise Control with brake function, Lane Departure Warning, the Evasion Assistant, and front-collision warning. The BMW Drive Recorder functions add a fun and entertaining aspect, especially for family trips. And for added security, the Remote Theft Recorder provides peace of mind.

Should You Consider the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer?

There is no doubt that the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will be a hit for the Bavarian brand. It improves upon its predecessor in all areas without a significant price increase. With its premium look and feel, it appeals to a wide range of customers. Whether you opt for the 220i, 223i, or the plug-in hybrid 230e, the 2 Series Active Tourer offers a compelling package.

Although the Active Tourer remains exclusive to European markets, it has the potential to become a popular choice among families and individuals seeking a versatile and sporty minivan. The all-electric version may not be available in this generation, but it's certainly a possibility for the future.

The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a bold and exciting update, offering a delightful driving experience, ample interior space, and a premium feel. If you're in the market for a versatile and stylish minivan, the 2 Series Active Tourer is worth considering.
