Are you looking for a stylish and practical storage solution for your home? Look no further than our custom Ikea cabinet built-ins! We recently embarked on a challenging renovation project to transform our work/play room, and the built-in storage cabinets were the most crucial part. In this article, we'll take you through the process of creating these stunning built-ins and provide you with some valuable insights along the way.

Making the Right Choice: Ikea's Sektion Line

After thorough research, we decided to go with Ikea's Sektion (kitchen cabinet) line. Why? The Sektion line offers a multitude of configurations and the ability to use custom doors, providing us with the flexibility and versatility we needed for our project. We opted for three 80′ tall cabinets, two 24″ base cabinets, and two 24×30″ wall cabinets to create the perfect layout.

Building the Foundation: Creating a Solid Base

Before securing the cabinets to the wall, we needed to build a sturdy base for them to sit on. We decided to customize our own base using 2×4's, ensuring a perfect fit and the ability to paint them to our liking. To achieve a flush look, we had to cut out the baseboard to allow the cabinets to sit seamlessly against the wall.

Ensuring Stability: The Importance of Leveling

To maintain stability, it was crucial for the base to be level. We cut 2x4's to the exact dimensions of the cabinets and used a support in the center. This ensured that the cabinet would sit directly on top of the base, providing optimal support. But keep in mind, even in a new house, the floor may not be perfectly level, so adjustments were necessary.

Overcoming Challenges: Customization and Adaptation

Every project has its unique challenges, and ours was no exception. For example, when dealing with the window area, we faced constraints due to the height limitations for a desk. To overcome this obstacle, we created a shallow frame using ripped-down 2x4's. Adjustments and careful measurements were necessary to ensure a perfect fit.

Achieving a Seamless Look: The Importance of Fillers and Panels

To achieve a truly built-in aesthetic, we incorporated fillers and panels into our design. With the help of 2x4 blocks, we created a seamless transition between the cabinets and the wall by attaching the filler pieces. This process required precision and attention to detail, but the end result was well worth the effort.

Fine-Tuning and Finishing: Painting and Detailing

Once the base and cabinets were securely in place, we focused on the finishing touches. We painted the trim and filler panels before installation to ensure a smooth and flawless finish. Detail sanding, puttying, and caulking were essential steps to achieve a professional and polished appearance.

The Final Outcome: A Stunning and Functional Space

After countless hours of hard work and attention to detail, we finally completed our custom Ikea cabinet built-ins. The result is a beautiful and functional space that perfectly fits our needs. Our window seat/kids desk is a favorite spot for reading and working, while the ample storage above the cabinets adds a touch of elegance and versatility.

Creating our custom Ikea cabinet built-ins was a labor of love, and we couldn't be happier with the results. If you're considering a similar project, we hope our experience and insights have inspired you.

We'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Should we keep the open storage above the cabinets or close it off? Do you have any suggestions on how to add a door or sliding drawer to access that space? Share your opinions below, and let's continue the conversation!
