Have you ever imagined a gift box that could captivate your senses and unfold a story? Kan, a prestigious Japanese restaurant designed by odd, brings this concept to life, offering a dining experience like no other. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese Juubako, a multi-layered wood box used for special occasions, Kan showcases six square boxes that serve as private dining rooms. Let's explore the enchanting design and artistry of this extraordinary restaurant.

Unveiling the Design Idea

Underneath the elegantly black space of Kan, six square boxes emerge in various shapes, paying homage to the tradition of Juubako. To enhance their allure, the designers have utilized the Maki-e technique, a centuries-old Japanese art form originating from the Tang Dynasty. Traditionally, Maki-e involves blending metal powder with lacquer, but for Kan, this technique has been masterfully reimagined using glass clip painting. This fusion of modernity and tradition breathes new life into the boxes, offering guests a truly unique present from far afield.

Experiencing the Staggering Space

In the T-shaped black space of Kan, the six gift boxes are thoughtfully arranged, creating a sense of staggering. These boxes, comprising five private rooms and one semi-open Itamae area, are cleverly positioned to offer both privacy and a feeling of connection. Some boxes appear to float, while others touch the ground, creating an intriguing visual contrast. The space is meticulously designed to evoke a sense of wonder and discovery.

Embracing the Beauty of Nature

To provide a delightful experience for guests, Kan incorporates a karesansui landscape, harmoniously blending with the flow of customers. The viewing window embedded in the wall blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior, offering a unique and extraordinary observing experience. As you navigate through the restaurant, you'll be able to enjoy the beauty of nature while immersing yourself in the art of Japanese cuisine.

The Itamae - A Culinary Masterpiece

At Kan, the Itamae holds a prominent role in presenting the incredible art of Japanese cuisine. The kitchen and Itamae preparation area are intricately connected, ensuring the freshest ingredients are promptly delivered to the chef's skilled hands. The semi-open Itamae area is the only gift box that opens up to the public, offering a glimpse into the culinary magic happening behind the scenes. The design elements, such as the wooden lines symbolizing distant clouds and the dark-toned marble niche, create a captivating contrast that enhances the overall aesthetic.

Private Rooms - An Exquisite Ambiance

Kan features two private rooms designed for business banquets, exuding both formality and vitality. These rooms have a higher concentration of metal elements, adding a touch of grandeur. In the four-person private room, the ceiling and wall seamlessly merge to form an arch-like structure. Delicate natural stones are meticulously carved into smaller pieces, creating a visually stunning and unique design language.

The six-person Washitsu, a Japanese-style suite, embraces a different expression while utilizing similar materials. This private room exudes simplicity and quality, with dark brown wood grid outlines, chartreuse green Tatami cushions, beige coarse-textured paintings, and white matte Japanese paper film. The design effortlessly blends elegance and tranquility.
