Are you looking for cost-effective and design-friendly furniture that can suit a variety of situations from dorm rooms to forever homes? Look no further than the IKEA Malm Bed. In this review, we'll discuss the pros and cons of owning this bed for the long haul.

Quality Concerns

IKEA is not typically known for using high-quality materials, and the Malm Bed is no exception. Made primarily of particle board covered in wood veneer, the bed may be prone to chipping. However, during the year we slept in the Malm Bed, we only experienced light and unnoticeable chipping. The construction also leaves something to be desired, as the bed is held together with screws and wheel locks, which may loosen over time.

One common complaint about the Malm Bed is its sharp corners and edges, which can lead to shin injuries. We did experience this issue ourselves, but if you are aware of it, it can be managed. Another complaint is the bed slats falling through the frame or the bed being noisy and creaky. Though we didn't personally encounter these problems, it may be worth securing the bed slats tightly with screws to prevent any issues.

Stylish and Versatile Design

Despite its drawbacks, the Malm Bed stands out for its stylish and minimalistic design. With clean lines and a low profile, it exudes a classic Scandinavian aesthetic. The wood veneer, especially in the White Stained Oak option, adds a touch of elegance. The simplicity of the design allows the bed to fit seamlessly into various decor settings, as shown in the images on IKEA's website.

Great Value for Money

When it comes to the value, the Malm Bed offers a great solution for those on a budget or in need of a temporary bed. With regular maintenance, it should hold up well for at least three years, but it may start to lose stability around year five to seven. By taking the extra step of screwing down the bed slats, you can avoid noise issues. The price point is also attractive, with the queen size available for $179. However, considering the same price for the full and $259 for the king, there might be better options available.
