Unleash Your Creativity with Ikea Ivar

When I was searching for the perfect sideboard for my dining room, I was left disappointed by the high prices. That's when I stumbled upon the Ikea Ivar cabinets, and it was a game-changer. These cabinets are made of solid pine, making them sturdy and ideal for staining. I opted for the 12-inch depth to save space and purchased two cabinets to create the illusion of a long sideboard. Inspired by a design from Lulu and Georgia, I embarked on my own DIY journey.

Supplies You'll Need

Before diving into the process, ensure you have the following supplies ready:

  • 2 Ikea Ivar cabinets (12-inch depth)
  • Wood for the countertop (optional)
  • Cane webbing
  • Legs (if desired)
  • 4 knobs
  • Jigsaw (for cutting out doors)
  • Screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Drill
  • Staple Gun + staples
  • Scissors
  • Sandpaper or electric sander (120 and 220 grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Wood conditioner
  • Stain of your choice (e.g., Golden Oak and White Wash)

Building the Perfect Sideboard - Step by Step

Step 1: Build Cabinet Boxes + Prep Doors

Start by assembling the cabinet boxes without attaching the doors. This will allow you to work on the doors separately.

If you plan on incorporating cane doors, determine the desired width for the outer edges of the doors. Measure and mark the designated distance from the edge of the door. Use masking or painters tape to cover the marked lines, providing a guide for clean and precise cuts. Remember to drill holes in each of the four corners before using a jigsaw to cut along the marked lines.

Step 2: Staining

After cutting the doors, attend to any major chips by filling them with wood filler and sanding them down with 120 grit sandpaper. Proceed to lightly sand everything with 220 grit sandpaper and remove the dust using a tack cloth.

If you're unsure about the stain color, use the scrap wood from the doors to do some swatches. Once you've decided, apply a wood conditioner to the surface and wipe off the excess. After waiting for 30 minutes, apply the stain using a similar method as the wood conditioner. You can repeat this process for a deeper color or add a white wash for a more unique finish.

Step 3: Prep + Attach Cane Webbing

Cut the cane webbing to the appropriate size, leaving a few extra inches on all sides for stapling. Soak the cane webbing in warm water for approximately 30 minutes to soften it. Once softened, start stapling the cane webbing to the doors, ensuring it is pulled tight for added sturdiness. Trim off any excess cane webbing.

Step 4: Assemble Your Custom Sideboard

To complete your sideboard, use the hinges provided by Ikea to attach the doors to the cabinet boxes. If you want to add a more personalized touch, consider attaching multiple cabinets together and adding a board across the top for a seamless surface. You can also enhance the look by installing legs and adding knobs or pulls.
