Giving your entryway a makeover can be a rewarding project. The IKEA Hemnes shoe cabinet offers compact shoe storage and a convenient surface for keys and mail. However, you may want to add a unique element to make it stand out. That's where this hack comes in. By adding wicker cane panels, you can elevate the aesthetic appeal of the cabinet.

Supplies Needed

Before you begin, gather the following supplies:

  • IKEA Hemnes Shoe Cabinet (white or black)
  • Thin wood pieces (12 - 2'x 2" pieces)
  • Miter Saw
  • Cane (4')
  • Scissors
  • Sander with 80 grit sandpaper
  • Wood Glue (high-quality)
  • Clamps
  • Contact cement
  • Scrap Wood
  • Heavy items
  • Awl
  • Knobs

Note: If you prefer not to work with wicker cane, there is an alternative option - cane contact paper.

  7. Allow the glue to dry for at least 24 hours.

Ensuring Drawer Functionality

After adding the cane panels, you may discover that the drawers no longer open smoothly. Follow these steps to address the issue:

  1. Use 80 grit sandpaper to sand down the edges, creating a smooth and rounded surface that allows the drawers to open properly.

Adding the Cane Panels

Now, it's time to add the cane panels to your shoe cabinet.

  1. Soak the cane in warm water for at least 30 minutes to soften it and make it easier to work with. Cane soaking in water
  2. Dry the cane with an old towel.
  3. Use scissors to cut the cane to the size of the cabinet openings. Cutting cane to size
  4. Dry fit the cane panels, trimming them further if necessary. Dry fitting cane panel
  5. Apply a thin layer of contact cement to the cabinet. Applying contact cement to panel
  6. Carefully place the cane panels on the cabinet.
  7. Cover the panels with scrap wood, ensuring all edges are pressed down.
  8. Place heavy objects, such as paint cans, on top of the scrap wood to hold it in place while the glue dries. Heavy paint cans sitting on cane while it dries
  9. Allow the glue to dry for approximately 24 hours.
  10. Finish assembling the drawers and install them in the cabinet.

Adding the Knobs

Lastly, you may face the challenge of the cane panels covering the knob holes. Follow these steps to address this issue:

  1. Use an awl or any small, pointy object to push the cane aside, creating an opening for the knobs.
