Building a Porch Swing Bed: From Simple to Extraordinary

Building a porch swing bed doesn't have to be complicated. With a few materials readily available at your local Lowe's Home Improvement Store, you can create a stunning swing bed. The best part? You don't need to be an expert craftsman to accomplish this. The simplicity of the design ensures that even beginners can tackle this project.

Before we dive in, let's go over the materials you'll need:

  • Finish Nailer
  • Tape Measurer
  • Wood Glue
  • Wood Stain
  • Wood Filler
  • Miter Saw
  • Sand Paper
  • Jig Saw
  • 4 Eye Screws
  • 1 1/4" Finish Nails
  • 2" Finish Nails

  • 3 pieces of 1" x 8" x 8' clear pine
  • 12 pieces of 1" x 3" x 8' clear pine
  • 1 piece of 1" x 4" x 8' clear pine
  • 2 pieces of 2" x 3" x 8' framing lumber
  • 1 piece of 2" x 4" x 8' framing lumber
  • 4 pieces of 1" x 6" x 8' knotty pine

Now that we have everything we need, let's get started.

Step 1: Building the Porch Swing Bed Frame

The first step is to build the main bed frame using the 1x8 boards. Follow the measurements provided in the illustration and use 2" finish nails to secure the joints.

Next, add an inner frame for support and to attach the bed slats. Use 2x4 boards for the sides and 2x3 boards for the front and back. Secure them with 2" nails, ensuring they are flush and even.

To create the slats for the mattress support, cut eight 39" pieces of 1x6 knotty pine. Space them out evenly along the inside of the bed frame, approximately 4 1/2" apart, and nail them in place.

Step 2: Building the Posts

Construct four posts using 1x3 clear pine, one for each corner of the porch swing bed. Apply wood glue along one edge of the two pieces, form an "L" shape, and align the edges perfectly. Nail them together using 2" nails. Attach each post to the corners of the bed frame with glue and 1 1/4" nails.

Step 3: Adding the Rails

After securing the posts, it's time to add the rails that connect them. Start by attaching the back rails, following the lengths and spacing provided in the illustration. Then, attach the side rails.

For the armrest pieces, cut pieces of 1x3 and use a jigsaw to create a notch for them to fit around the back posts. Glue and nail them in place as shown. Finally, add 1x3 trim around the bottom of the swing on all four sides using glue and 1 1/4" nails.

Step 4: Filling Holes and Staining

Fill any holes with wood putty, round off the corners, and sand the swing bed using fine sandpaper. Apply a coat of wood stain and three coats of polyurethane for added protection.

Step 5: Adding the Eye Screws

Once everything is dry, it's time to add the eye screws that will hold up the swing. Measure 1" from the edge of each post and 1 1/4" up from the bottom, positioning the screw in the middle of the bottom trim piece. Drill a hole and screw in the eye screw.

That's it! Your porch swing bed is complete. When hanging your swing, make sure to use the same eye screws in the ceiling and screw into ceiling joists for stability. Add a comfortable twin mattress, a custom mattress cover, and some pillows to finish it off.
