Last week, something interesting happened to me. After upgrading my desk using Feng Shui principles, a reporter I didn't even know reached out to me and asked to feature it in an upcoming article in Coast Magazine. This experience made me realize the power of Feng Shui and how it can positively impact our lives.
Why Feng Shui Your Desk?
Your desk is not just a piece of furniture. It represents your career, which is the gateway to your life path. By applying Feng Shui principles to your desk, you can enhance the energy flow, known as Chi or Qi, and improve various aspects of your life, including your business success.
Desk Feng Shui
The key to adding Feng Shui to your desk lies in understanding the Bagua, which is the center of the Black Hat Feng Shui universe. The Bagua is crucial in ensuring that your desk aligns with your career goals and life path. Imagine your desk divided like a tic-tac-toe board, with the Career Area against the side where your chair sits.
As you sit at your desk, your left hand should touch the Knowledge, Family, and Prosperity/Wealth areas. Similarly, your right hand should touch the Helpful People/Travel, Creativity/Children, and Love areas. The middle of your desk represents the Health Area, and directly in front of you should be the Reputation/Fame area.
The colors and elements you use should align with those of the respective areas of the Bagua in your home. For more guidance, I recommend reading up on the Feng Shui Bagua.
The Bagua Sections of the Desk
-
Career: This area, right in front of you, is represented by water. Keep this space clear to invite new work opportunities. You can place a picture of flowing water underneath your glass desk or tape it underneath if you don't have a glass top.
-
Knowledge: The bottom-left area, associated with knowledge, should have blue elements. Consider placing books or a small bookshelf related to your profession in this corner.
-
Family: The middle-left area represents family and is associated with wood and the color green. Decorate this area with portraits of loved ones or colleagues in wooden frames.
-
Prosperity & Wealth: The upper-left corner is dedicated to prosperity and wealth. Use gold, purple, and green colors. Include elements that symbolize wealth, such as a money plant, a picture of your dream home, or golden trinkets.
-
Reputation & Fame: The top-middle square is for reputation and fame. Fire is the dominant element, represented by the color red. Place awards, nameplates, or business cards in this area.
-
Love & Relationships: The upper-right corner is associated with love and relationships. Pink and love symbols represent this area well. Include a photo of your spouse or a hidden description of your ideal mate.
-
Creativity & Children: The middle-right area is where creativity flows. Metal and black & white items are associated with this area. Display pictures of your kids or something creative that inspires you.
-
Helpful People & Travel: The lower-right corner is where you can call upon the help of others. Use silver or grey colors. Place business cards or a small globe in this area.
-
Health: The center square represents health and is associated with the earth element and earth tones. Keep this area clutter-free or place objects that signify the earth, like a jar of decorative stones.
Feng Shui Desk Shapes
Different desk shapes serve different purposes:
- Rectangle: Ideal for individual work and concentration.
- Circle: Perfect for brainstorming and creativity, making it ideal for group meetings.
- Curved: If you often get disturbed while working, consider a curved desk. The concave area helps concentration, while the convex area keeps others from approaching too often.
Feng Shui Desk Material
The material of your desk can also affect the energy flow:
- Wood: Sturdy and reliable, wood desks provide a strong foundation for your career.
- Metal: Metal desks offer mental energy and concentration, but be mindful as they can drain your body.
- Glass: While revealing, glass desks allow energy to pass through quickly. To slow down the energy, use wooden accessories or plants.
- Laminate: Desks made of laminate materials provide neutral energy.
Feng Shui Desk Colors
The color of your desk influences the energy in your workspace:
- Black: Attracts inward energy, encouraging introspection and creating opportunities.
- Brown: Stabilizes and strengthens the body, but doesn't energize the mind.
- White: Activates the mind but may drain the body's energy.
- Gray or Metallic: Increases focus but may drain the physical body.
- Green: Balances the body and mind, ideal for long-term projects.
- Earth Tones: Lighter earth tones provide mental focus without draining the body as much as gray.
- Bright Colors: Draw attention but make the body and mind restless. Reserve bright desks for reception areas.
- Wooden Colors: Medium-toned wood colors provide stability and strength to the body, energizing the mind. Pine, ash, oak, and birch colors offer the right amount of contrast with white paper.
Additional Feng Shui Desk Tips
Here are some extra tips to enhance your desk's Feng Shui:
- Proportions: Choose a desk size that suits your work requirements. Make sure you can reach everything without cluttering your workspace.
- Strong Foundation: Look for desks with sturdy legs for a strong foundation, symbolizing your career and life path.
- Modesty Panel: Consider a desk with a modesty panel to create boundaries and establish security.
- Face Toward the Door: Where possible, position your desk so you can see the entrance to your office. This avoids the stress of having your back to the door.
- Windows: Avoid having your back toward windows, as the energy can be overwhelming. Use Feng Shui cures to minimize the effect.
- Power Position: Place your desk in a position where you can see as much of the room as possible.
- Keep It Positive: Decorate your desk with uplifting and empowering objects.
- Feng Shui Mouse Pad: Consider using a Feng Shui mouse pad to boost positive energy and remind you of the Bagua layout.
- Clutter: Eliminate clutter from your desk and office. Feng Shui calls for a clean and organized workspace.
- Home Office or Workplace: Apply Feng Shui principles to both your home office and workplace to align your career and life path.
