Surfing in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a surfers' paradise, attracting wave enthusiasts from all corners of the world. What makes it so special? Aside from the year-round balmy water temperatures, the country offers a diverse array of surf breaks along both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. While the Caribbean coast has a shorter season, the Pacific Coast boasts a consistent swell from both the north and the south.

If you're dreaming of owning your own slice of Costa Rica surf heaven, there are opportunities to purchase real estate near some of the best Pacific Coast surf breaks. Regardless of when you choose to stay in your Costa Rica property, great waves are guaranteed. Our team of agents includes avid surfers who can guide you to the best surfers' properties on the coast. Here's a brief overview of what you can expect from surfing in Costa Rica:

Pacific Coast - Tamarindo and Playa Grande: A Surfer's Dream

Tamarindo is the ultimate surf mecca on the Pacific Coast and a must-visit destination for any surfer heading to Costa Rica. This vibrant town was even featured in the cult surfing movies "Endless Summer I and II." Tamarindo boasts excellent waves in its wide bay and provides easy access to renowned breaks like Roca Bruja (Witch's Rock), Ollies Point, Playa Negra, Playa Avellanas, Playa Langosta, and Playa Grande.

After a thrilling day of catching waves, Tamarindo offers a lively atmosphere with top-notch restaurants, hotels, shopping, bars, nightlife, and a myriad of activities to suit all tastes and budgets. Golfing, quad tours, sport fishing, sailing, eco-tours, horseback riding, and diving are just a few of the additional attractions the North Pacific coast has to offer. If you're traveling with non-surfers, don't worry, there are plenty of pristine beaches and calm coves nearby, like Flamingo Beach, Playa Potrero, Playa Conchal, Playa Penca, and Sugar Beach.

Tamarindo is also a perfect place to learn to surf in Costa Rica. Its bay offers long, clean curls, ideal for beginners. If you're interested in surf lessons or need information about surf tours, Cairo Borquet is an excellent local surfer who speaks English fluently and is experienced in teaching children, beginners, and experts alike. With over 10 years of experience and CPR certification, Cairo offers group or private lessons. Another outstanding Tamarindo surf instructor is Raph, the owner of Secret Spot in downtown Tamarindo, who also rents surfboards and sells clothing, gear, and accessories.

If you're looking to invest in Costa Rica real estate near the best surfing spots in the Tamarindo area, we have exceptional condos, homes, and lots available. Contact us to inquire about surf properties today!

Central and South Pacific Coast - Hermosa and Jaco: Winter Surf Haven

The best time to surf the Central and Southern Pacific coast is during Costa Rica's winter season, from June to November. Jaco, a well-established beach town located about two hours drive from San Jose, is a popular spot among surfers. Jaco provides easy access to constant beach breaks at Playa Hermosa and other nearby surfing beaches.

For surfers venturing further south along the coast, Playa Dominical is the next major destination. The river mouth offers good left and right breaks, and various points can be accessed up and down the beach.

If you're up for an adventure, Pavones near the Osa Peninsula boasts one of the world's longest left breaks. Prime surfing time at Pavones is between August and September. Although the weather can be wet and the roads muddy (a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended), the incredible surf makes it all worthwhile.

Caribbean Coast - Salsa Brava and Beyond

While the Caribbean coast has a relatively short surfing season, it benefits from seasonal storms that generate waves ranging from 2 to 12 feet. One of the most famous Caribbean breaks is Salsa Brava, a powerful right reef break that produces thrilling barrels.

If you're looking for exceptional Costa Rica homes at or near the best surfing spots, we can help you find the perfect property.
