At Gensler, the world's leading design firm, the visibility and contributions of LGBTQ+ designers are being celebrated. In an industry that prides itself on diversity and inclusion, it is important to shine a light on the talented individuals who are making a difference. The LGBTQ+ community has a long history in the design world, and it is time to recognize their invaluable contributions.

The Lack of Visibility

While the design industry has often been seen as a welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community, there is still a lack of visibility in research and initiatives focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The modern conception of interior design, credited to Elsie de Wolfe, was shaped by a gay woman. However, the community's visibility, especially for LGBTQ+ women, remains low.

Overrepresentation in Design

According to Gallup, 5.1% of women identify as LGBTQ+, compared to 3.9% of men. However, the 2017 AIGA Design Census reveals that 11.7% of designers identify as LGBTQ+. This overrepresentation raises the question: Where are the workplace studies and initiatives that support the queer community in the design industry?

Gensler's Diversity Report

In 2021, Gensler, the global design firm ranked #1 in Interior Design's Giants survey, published its first annual Diversity Report. The study revealed that 7% of Gensler's U.S. workforce identifies as LGBTQ+. Additionally, 0.5% identifies as non-binary or third gender. The co-CEOs of Gensler, Andy Cohen, and Diane Hoskins, emphasize that diversity of background and experience is crucial for innovation within the firm.
