The 2021 BMW 5 Series has recently undergone a mid-cycle refresh, with particular attention given to its interior. While the focus has been on enhancing the technology, there are also subtle stylistic changes that aim to elevate the overall experience without completely overhauling the design.

A Blend of Old and New BMW Essence

The interior of the 2021 BMW 5 Series combines elements from both older and newer BMW models. It shares similarities with the interior of the 7 Series, as well as the more contemporary design found in the X5, X7, and 8 Series. These newer models feature a universal center console, screen setup, and dash design that is one generation ahead of what the 5 Series currently offers. While some may view this as a drawback, the combination of old and new elements creates a distinct character for the 5 Series.

Subdued Elegance

BMW continues its commitment to a laid-back and simplistic design philosophy with the 5 Series. The center stack retains its semi-busy layout, with climate controls and assorted buttons that may appear similar at first glance. The trim and dash design exude a sense of sophistication but do not aim to match the more opulent aesthetic of Mercedes-Benz's E-Class. The 5 Series can still be outfitted with high-quality leather and lavish wood trim, but it embraces a more straightforward and understated approach. The available color combinations—black, white, beige, and tan/brown—are equally uncomplicated and down-to-earth.

Technological Advancements

BMW has made significant technological advancements with the 2021 5 Series. One notable change is the replacement of the previous 10.25-inch infotainment screen with a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen running the latest iDrive 7 software. Additionally, Android Auto is now supported wirelessly, alongside the existing Apple CarPlay functionality. These features, previously available only as options, now come as standard. The analog-digital hybrid instrument cluster has been upgraded to a fully digital display, adding a modern touch. While the infotainment system and digital gauge cluster offer a high-tech feel, competitors like Mercedes and Audi provide more customization options.

Comfort and Practicality

The 5 Series excels in providing exceptional comfort and practicality. The seats offer ample support and feature significant thigh support in the front. However, the ultra-thick steering wheel may not extend downward enough to complement a low-seated position. Rear passengers benefit from 36.5 inches of legroom, as well as a spacious and easily accessible backseat. The central armrest provides added comfort, though the tall central tunnel can be slightly bothersome for those occupying the middle seat. Unfortunately, the trunk, considering the vehicle's size, could be larger. While it offers 14 cubic-feet of space, the opening lacks the desired height, limiting the ease of loading. It is worth noting that the test car in question includes the optional space-saver spare tire, which reduces the available under-floor storage.

A Tranquil Journey

One of the standout aspects of the 5 Series interior is its ability to effectively isolate occupants from external noise. The cabin has been acoustically sealed to an impressive level, rivaling the more luxurious 7 Series. Road, wind, and tire noise are significantly reduced, resulting in a serene driving experience. While this means missing out on the delightful exhaust sounds of the inline-six or V8 engines, the 5 Series prioritizes comfort and refinement over raw performance. For those seeking the perfect audio accompaniment on long highway drives, the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system delivers exceptional quality. The new 5 Series truly shines during road trips and daily commutes, combining comfort and speed in a refined four-door package.

Remember, the 2021 BMW 5 Series offers a mature choice for drivers who prioritize comfort, technology, and understated elegance.
